2000 Awards Nomination Time!

By James T. Cook,
 First Past President

The time is at hand to, once again, recognize those IMAPS members who have given their time, energy, and expertise to ensure the excellence of our industry. Whether they demonstrate this dedication by the excellent technical work they do or volunteer their time at the chapter level, or become active in national and international activities, it is all vital to maintaining the high quality of our endeavors. We would not be the strong international society we are if it were not for all of these efforts. Now we have the opportunity to let them know that we value their dedication and that their hard work has not gone unnoticed.

The five awards presented annually are: the Daniel C. Hughes Jr. Memorial Award; the William D. Ashman Award; Fellow of the Society; the John A. Wagnon Technical Achievement Award; and the Corporate Recognition Award.

Nominations are solicited from the General Membership through publication in Advancing Microelectronics, the Executive Council, the Advisory Council, Local Chapters, and the Awards Evaluation Committee. All nominations must be submitted by someone other than the nominee. The involvement of all members is imperative to a great reward program. If you feel that one of your colleagues is eligible and deserving of an award, please nominate him or her. The committee's ability to select those members who have contributed to the success of the society and our technologies are dependent on you nominating them. The 1998 Awards Committee is actively seeking nominations for all Awards. You may submit nominations to your chapter president, regional director, or me (chairman of the 1998 Awards Committee). Please note the criteria for each award.

Daniel C. Hughes Jr. Memorial Award is the highest, most prestigious award for the individual who has the strongest list of technical achievements relating to microelectronics and packaging industries, academic achievement, or support and service to IMAPS. Recipients must be an IMAPS member for a minimum of five years prior to the award. Recipients of the award become Life Members of IMAPS.

William D. Ashman Award is the most prestigious award presented to the person who has performed outstanding service in contributing to the electronic packaging industry and who invented or developed a concept, product, component, or process that has made an impact on the industry. Recipients of the award become Life Members of IMAPS.

Fellow of the Society honors and recognizes those who have made important and continuing contributions to IMAPS over the years. Some of the criteria considered are 1) membership in IMAPS for 10 or more years, 2) service to IMAPS as a local or national officer, 3) service to IMAPS as a local or national committee member, and 4) presentation of papers at local or national symposia.

John A. Wagnon Technical Achievement Award focuses specifically on contributions made to the technical knowledge of the industry. This award may be given for a specific accomplishment, for a number of accomplishments over a period of years, or for general overall technical contributions to the microelectronics and packaging industry.

The Corporate Recognition Award recognizes a corporation (or the appropriate division or department of a corporation) which has provided significant technical contributions to the microelectronics and packaging industries, while also demonstrating support of IMAPS. The corporation, through participation in such activities as corporate memberships, symposium exhibition, encouragement and support of individual membership, and member participation demonstrates a strong involvement in IMAPS.

Why is it important for you to participate in the award's process? Primarily it provides recognition to your colleagues for their contributions to our industry and Society. The Society's awards program can be a great program, only if we recognize those individuals who contribute to the society and our technologies. You are the key to making this a great program. The Awards Committee can only do so much without your help and input. Your involvement in the award's recognition program may also be the first step in becoming more involved in the society. Just as the award's program can only be great with your involvement, the society needs your involvement as well.

April 15, 2000, is the deadline for all Nominations. Help us by beating the rush and send in your nominations as soon as possible. The official Awards Nominations forms can be accessed online by following the link below.  Give us as much information as you can about your nominee and their accomplishments. The Society relies on you to make sure our members get the recognition they deserve. Our Awards Program is vibrant and strong--your involvement will keep it that way. If you have any questions, please contact Doug Paul, Marketing Manager, IMAPS Headquarters, 703-758-1060 or 888-GO-IMAPS, ext. 162
